ACT Police Receive High Tech ARV to Combat Dangerous Situations
Canberra, ACT, Australia (News4us.com) May 09, 2011
Attorney-General Robert McClelland and Member for Canberra Gai Brodtmann today officially handed over a new high-tech Armoured Rescue Vehicle to the ACT Government to help police deal with dangerous situations such as hostage incidents or acts of terrorism.
Mr McClelland said the vehicle was built in the United States by leading international manufacturer Lenco Engineering at a cost of approximately $400,000.
“These types of vehicles are amongst the best of their type in the world,” he said.
“These ARVs are used in dozens of countries as part of high risk policing activities. They are designed to be bulletproof and blastproof and are specifically manufactured to protect police in very hostile situations, or help with the safe rescue of hostages or injured personnel.
“The vehicle will also provide additional counter-terrorism capability.
“The purchase of the Armoured Rescue Vehicles was agreed to by members of the National Counter-Terrorism Committee, which includes representatives of each Australian state and territory and the Commonwealth.”
Ms Brodtmann said the vehicle will be used by the Australian Federal Police’s ACT Policing Unit.
“This is a great example of the close and collaborative relationship between the Commonwealth and the ACT Government in building local policing resources and boosting Australia’s counter-terrorism capability,” Ms Brodtmann said.
“The vehicle will provide extra capability in the very unlikely event of a terrorist incident; it will increase the protection of police in very dangerous and hostile situations, and assist in the safe rescue of hostages and injured personnel.”
ACT Chief Police Officer Roman Quaedvlieg accepted the vehicle from the Australian Government.
This vehicle is one of three recently purchased, the other two vehicles are being handed over to South Australia and the Northern Territory in the coming weeks.
While the vehicle will provide an additional counter-terrorism capability, the purchase does not reflect any change to the current National Terrorism Public Alert level which remains at Medium.
