AFP’s Corporate Communications Team Joins Forces With Local Businesses & Sport Stars to Make-A-Wish Come True

Members of the AFP’s Corporate Communications team joined forces with local businesses and sport stars recently to grant a wish to a seriously ill child in Canberra on behalf of Make-A-Wish Australia.

Make-A-Wish Australia grants wishes to children between the ages of three and 18 who have been diagnosed with a life threatening medical condition.

For seven year old Matthew, who has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and has to regularly attend The Sydney Children’s Hospital, that wish was for his very own cubby house.

Saturday 26 February proved to be both a heart-and-house warming party for Matthew as volunteers from the AFP, Wellsmore Building Group, ACT Brumbies and Greater Western Sydney Giants granted his cherished wish by building a cubby house in the backyard of his family’s ACT home.

AFP Manager Corporate Communications, David Sharpe, said he was thrilled with the way in which everyone had come together for such a wonderful cause.

“When you have people cooperate like they have here today, it doesn’t make much to make the dreams of kids like Matthew come true,” Commander Sharpe said.

“But for that very little work, you get a very fulfilling return – a smile on a seriously ill child’s face.”

Make-A-Wish Australia CEO, Vici Funnell said the organisation granted a record 491 cherished wishes to children last year and that the impact of wishes cannot be under estimated.

“We wish that Aussie kids never got sick, but it is great to know that more children can experience the joy and happiness that comes with the granting of a cherished wish,” Ms Funnell said.

The AFP would like to thank the following organisations for their assistance in helping us grant Matthew’s wish:

  • Wellsmore Building Group
  • ACT Brumbies
  • Greater Western Sydney Giants
  • Bunnings Warehouse, Fyshwick
