Australian Population Passes 22 Million Mark

Recent reports by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that the residential population of Australia has passed the 22 million mark.

With the latest figures indicating that approximately 22,546,300 people now reside within Australia.



This growth rate of 1.4% was described by the bureau as the lowest rate since 2005.

While all states and territories experienced positive population growth, Western Australia experienced the fastest growth at 2.2%. The Northern territory had the slowest growth reported at 0.4%.

States and Territories from highest to lowest for the March key figures as follows:

Western Australia 2.2%

Australian Capital Territory 1.8%

Queensland 1.6%

Victoria 1.5%

New South Wales 1.1%

South Australia 0.8%

Tasmania 0.6%

Northern Territory 0.4%

The latest figures show an increase of 312,400 persons since March 2010 with a lower figure for net overseas migration standing at 167,100 persons compared to March 2010 which showed 220,000 persons migrating overseas.
