Australian Rugby League’s No School No Play Project Launched

The Minister for School Education Peter Garrett and Member for Sydney Tanya Plibersek today launched Australian Rugby League’s No School No Play project at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.

Mr Garrett said the program works to promote the benefits of regular school attendance to students in targeted schools.

“Many students are highly motivated to play their favourite sport, and we are using that desire and motivation to increase their commitment to school,” Mr Garrett said.

“The 190 high school students participating in the program, across five selected schools in NSW and Queensland, have set school attendance targets with the school and will be rewarded for achieving those targets.”

The schools participating in this initiative are Condoblin, Tweed River and Walgett High Schools in New South Wales, and Logan and Ipswich State High Schools in Queensland.

“It is vitally important to ensure our children attend school, as we know that young people who don’t finish Year 12 are more than twice as likely to be unemployed or not go on to further study,” Ms Plibersek said.

“Completing school greatly increases each student’s future employment opportunities.”

The Australian Rugby League has received $130,000 to run No School No Play projects in the five targeted schools.

The Australian Government’s $2 million No School No Play initiative is being delivered on behalf of the Government by eight national sporting organisations, including the Australian Rugby league.
