Australian short film Lily has been awarded the prestigious Crystal Bear Award for Best Short Film in Generation K Plus at the 2011 Berlin International Film Festival.
Written and directed by Kasimir Burgess and produced by Julia Ciccarone, Lily is about a girl and her father who share their last holiday together. The film stars Eloise Raits and Richard Stables.
On awarding Lily, the Berlin jury said, “We really love this film because of the touching and beautiful way in which a young girl looks after her ill father. This and the wonderful camera work created for us an unforgettable cinematic experience.”
Lily screened in Berlin’s Generation K Plus section – a special section for children and youths.
Australian short film Minnie Loves Junior written and directed by Andy Mullins and Matt Mullins also received Special Mention in the Generation K Plus section. Produced by Tom Birch and Doug Maskiell, the film is a love story set in a seaside fishing village starring Wyntah Shaw and Lartrell Stuart.
The Berlin jury said of the film, “True love doesn’t need words, at least not that many. That is what this touching story about two children on the beach in Australia has shown us. A small girl falls in love with a dreamy beachcomber who doesn’t at first return her love but then literally takes a dive.”
Screen Australia supported the filmmakers of both Lily and Minnie Loves Junior to attend the Berlin International Film Festival and to market their films at the festival.
