Cairns Festival Esplanart 2012 – Art on the Waterfront Set to Bloom
Cairns, QLD, Australia – (News4us.com) May 26, 2012
After generating strong interest from the region’s emerging and established visual artists, Esplanart’s successful applicants have been advised and are now creating installations that will be exhibited for public delight and enjoyment during Cairns Festival.
Esplanart 2012 is an ephemeral art exhibition comprising 10 installations by local artists that will be positioned along Cairns Esplanade between Wednesday, 15 August and Sunday, 2 September, 2012.
Cairns Regional Council Mayor Bob Manning said he was delighted to announce the return of Esplanart to the city’s foreshore.
“This event will focus the spotlight on local artistic talent and the city’s spectacular waterfront,” Cr Manning said.
“The Esplanade will be in all its glory during Festival season, attracting locals and visitors alike. The addition of art installations will add a special dimension to a familiar yet picturesque setting.”
Council’s Creative Cairns Manager Leslie Sparkes said the quality of entries was breathtaking.
“While we were buoyed by the response from artists and the diverse creativity of work proposed, it was their compelling interpretations of Cairns, its sense of place and culture that was so impressive and made the selection process challenging,” she said.
“Esplanart will transform Cairns Esplanade into an inter-active, artistic wonderland.”
A fabulously eclectic and compelling collection will include such works as Peter Thompson’s ‘Mythical Spirits’ – a kinetic device made from salvaged materials and Danelle Masters’ ‘Drop Spot’ – a play on the iconic crab pot which provides the public with an engaging underwater vantage point, as well as Kristin Tennyson’s ‘Dog Walk’ collection of three dimensional dog sculptures and Jenni Bullock’s ‘First Breath’ based on the traditional “Fish Kites’.
Adding to the public interest in this year’s exhibition will be a People’s Choice award.
“This year, for the first time, the public will be able to vote for the artwork that most appeals to them,” Ms Sparkes said.
“This is sure to add interest to the exhibition by inviting interaction from the public and extra incentive for the artists to connect with their audience.”
Successful artists who will exhibit works in this year’s Esplanart are Adam Coutts, Buck Richardson and Henri Hungsinger, Danelle Masters, Emily Camilleri, Jenni Bullock, Kristin Tennyson, Leonie Besley, Lynnette Griffiths, Norie Wah Day and Peter Thompson.
Esplanart 2012 is being coordinated by Cairns Regional Council and is a free event in this year’s Cairns Festival program.
The project is designed to both nurture and promote the region’s wealth of creative talent while offering new opportunities for community engagement.
This year will mark the city’s third Esplanart exhibition with previous events held in 2009 and 2010.
