Classic Cars Converge in Cairns

Classic Cars Converge in Cairns

On Saturday 30 June and Sunday 1 July, 2012 the streets of Cairns will become a rolling parade of lovingly restored vehicles (pre-dating 1983 but with current registration)  participating in Australia’s first precision classic rally.

Organiser, Zoltan Vandulek said he is excited that Cairns will be home to Australia’s first regulation rally that is modelled on Europe’s well known events such as the legendary Italian “Mille Miglia” or Austria’s “Silvretta Classic”.

Since this precision rally is organised for the first time in Cairns, Australia Classic 2012 Cairns will be managed by a visiting team from European timing sponsor, Chronomoto who have pledged to broadcast coverage of Cairns’ rally in Europe.

“These races are sort of a gentlemen’s rally, they’re not about speed and taking risks, but as the name suggests, precision driving.”

“In short, drivers and their navigators will be given a roadbook from which they will follow a 600 kilometre course that is completed over two days and comprises 14 timed coordination stages.”

“The objective is to be on time to the 100th of the second and vie for each stage prize as well as three major prizes up for grabs,” he said.

Australia Classic will be held on public roads, alongside regular traffic, and as such, will be required to adhere strictly to all road rules.

The route, which is kept secret, until the morning of the event, crosses diverse far northern landscapes and picturesque scenery from Cairns to Port Douglas, the Atherton Tablelands and Innisfail.

Zoltan said that since the event was launched last month, they have already secured more than 30 race registrations but are looking to double to reach the maximum limit of 60 cars.

“We are appealing to Australian classic car owners as well as local members of our community to experience the thrill and enjoyment of a precision rally.

The beauty of this event is its low risk factor that allows motorists to compete in safety while showing off their valuable car.”

The entry fee is $550 per vehicle that includes the enrolment package, decals, ID tags, five meals for driver and navigator and a chance to win any one of the 14 stage and three major prizes.
