Cairns Esplanade will become an interactive wonderland of artistic sculptures and art installations with the return of Esplanart to this year’s Cairns Festival program.

Esplanart’s coordinator, Simone Roseler from Community, Sport and Cultural Facilities at Cairns Regional Council said that after a year off, Esplanart’s revival is welcome news for the local arts community.

“We strongly encourage both emerging and experienced artists to put their ideas forward.

This exhibition is about reflecting Cairns’ sense of place while showcasing local talent at all levels.”

The closing date for expressions of interest is this Friday 9 March.

Ms Roseler said they have designed the application process to be straightforward in an effort to encourage as many entries as is possible.

A passionate advocate for increasing the presence of arts and culture in Cairns community, Mayor Val Schier says “Esplanart brings another angle to our already stunning waterfront precinct.

“Our natural assets and tropical lifestyle no doubt provide local artists with plenty of inspiration.

How this is transformed into artworks during the next few months will be exciting to see.”

Adding to the public interest in this year’s exhibition will be a People’s Choice award.

“This year, for the first time, the public will be able to vote for the artwork that most appeals to them,” Cr Schier said.

“This is sure to add interest to the exhibition by inviting interaction from the public and extra incentive for the artists to connect with their audience.”

Expressions of Interest from artists are now being accepted, with 10 shortlisted artists to be invited to develop their works for exhibition during Esplanart 2012.

“Works need to relate to the Esplanade environment and, being an outdoor exhibition, should be suitable to withstand various weather conditions,” Cr Schier said.

“But above all else, we hope to uncover artworks that are inspiring and celebrate our region.”

Expressions of Interest close on Friday, 9 March.

Artists will be notified of their outcome by the end of March.

Installation of artworks will take place on Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 August in time for Cairns Festival that runs from Friday 17 August to Sunday 2 September.

Artworks will remain in place along the Esplanade for the duration of the festival.
