Facebook Places Goes Live For Users

The much awaited Facebook Places is finally here and went live on the 18th of August.

The new controversial service from the social media goliath and its 500 million plus users, is being touted as the next big thing in the electronic modern frontier. It is seen as the next evolution to the company’s already incredibly successful platform.

Facebook Places intrudes into what was originally the exclusive domain of leading online company Foursquare. With 3 million users Foursquare reported that it was not worried and has recorded the highest user sign-ups to date since Places went live.

Many industry insiders have sounded the death knell for Foursquare who pioneered this unique type of technology. Facebook, through its sheer number of users, can easily impact any online industry sector it decides to venture into.

The new controversial service allows users to share their current location in real time through their smart phones. It is open to a user’s entire network of Facebook friends and through adjusting settings can also be changed to a select group of friends.

Another great feature besides sharing your location is the ability to tag other people’s locations, so you know where they are as they move about. This also comes in particularly handy if you are trying to dodge certain individuals.

To appease the privacy rights groups and help stop any future uproar over privacy infringements, Facebook has made it extremely simple and clear for users to use. To say the online social media company is treading very carefully with this new addition to its online platform is an understatement.

Option changes are freely available for the new service, including the ability to not allow people to tag your current location.
