Flexiant Plan to Create a Pan-European Cloud Platform Moves Closer with the European Commission’s Acceptance

A plan to create a pan-European cloud platform moves closer this week following the European Commission’s (EC) acceptance of a proposal by a consortium of industrial partners including software and services company, Flexiant.

The three million euro research and development programme is now underway following the successful outcome of hearings with all members of the consortium in Brussels. The research and development project, CumuloNimbo, is the third EC Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) project Flexiant has been appointed to in 2010 and cements the company’s position at the cutting edge of cloud computing in Europe.

Tony Lucas, Flexiant’s founder explains: “The aim of CumuloNimbo is to create competitive advantage for European companies allowing them to compete globally. This cloud platform will reduce start up costs, capital expenditure and energy consumption, slash operating costs and significantly shrink carbon footprint. It is an extremely exciting project to be involved in and we are proud to be leading this work for Europe.”

Flexiant will provide a test bed on its public and private cloud platform, guaranteeing that results are demonstrated in a live industrial environment. CumuloNimbo aims to create a radically new platform as a service (PaaS) providing high scalability, with over 100 service nodes, without sacrificing data consistency and ease of programming. The targeted PaaS will be a multi-tier software stack for cloud computing providing the same functionality to current software multi-tier stacks, including Java EE, SAP Netweaver and .NET.

Flexiant’s pioneering research and development team built the UK’s first cloud platform, and it is this capability that enables the company to provide a robust proving ground for the European Commission, demonstrating that CumuloNimbo is able to run in a real public cloud.

CumuloNimbo will provide scalable and dependable service platforms by providing a holistic replication solution to multi-tier service platforms that scales to 100+ nodes and delivers continuous availability and full transactional coherence even in the advent of failures.

Specific platform components including object cache, application server, query engine, distributed file system, storage subsystem and communication subsystems will be offered. Quality of service will be ensured by providing high levels of consistency, continuous availability and elastic computing.

The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) bundles all research-related EU initiatives together under one roof and plays a crucial role in reaching the goals of growth, competitiveness and employment.

The broad objectives of FP7 have been grouped into four categories: cooperation, ideas, people and capacities. For each type of objective, there is a specific programme corresponding to the main areas of EU research policy. All specific programmes work together to promote and encourage the creation of European poles of scientific excellence.
