Golden Gurus Program Announces 34 Successful Applicants as Part of Australian Government’s $43 Million Productive Ageing Package

Minister for Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations Senator Chris Evans today announced the 34 successful grant applicants from the Golden Gurus program.

The program connects mature age mentors to businesses, as well as young apprentices, trainees, job seekers and workers, giving young people the benefit of mature experience and advice.

“This is a great outcome for communities—community organisations, their clients and new small business owners,” Senator Evans said.

“The grants will help organisations match mature age skilled volunteers to community organisations and new small businesses.

“The Golden Gurus Program is making the most of the experience and expertise of mature age people and I’m sure we will see many successful outcomes from this program.”

The $341,000 in grants will also help Golden Gurus Member Organisations build new opportunities for their mature age volunteers and prepare them for their mentoring roles.

The winning applicants include Auswide Projects, a community-based not-for-profit organisation that provides small business mentorship and expert advice for social enterprises and local community organisations.

Also receiving a Golden Gurus grant is Helping Hand Aged Care, a not-for-profit organisation in South Australia that will support Golden Gurus to mentor students in work experience, vocational training or higher education in the aged care sector.

“Successful applicants have shown they value their mature age volunteers and their contribution to the community, and are keen to provide them with further opportunities,” Senator Evans said.

The Golden Gurus program, started on 1 January 2010, now has 52 approved Member Organisations delivering Golden Gurus across Australia. The grants form part of the Australian Government’s $43 million Productive Ageing Package, recognising the contribution that mature age volunteers provide to the community.
