‘Home and Bedroom’ Leading Online Retailer of Quality Discount Furniture Sees Steady Sales for the Holiday Season
Houston, TX (News4us.com) December 21, 2010
Visions of sugarplums will be dancing in Furniture Retailers’ heads as they settle down into their metal beds this Christmas Eve. At least that’s what the latest retail sales statistics are indicating according to Reuters yesterday.
Spurred by brisk online shopping, for the first time since 2006, the retail industry is enjoying an upswing in sales. This unexpected growth is putting some of the long-lost sweetness back into recession-weary Americans’ holiday stockings.
Reuters reported earlier this week that, “Retail sales were stronger than expected in November,” with an increase of 0.8 percent overall. This marked the second straight month retailers enjoyed a boost in sales. The big winners were clothing and accessories stores and gas stations, but “consumers also spent on non-essential goods, lifting sales at sporting goods, hobby, book and music stores 2.3 percent, the biggest gain in almost a year.”
Weak spots included “electronics and appliance stores, which fell 0.6 percent last month, and furniture sales, [which] declined [by] 0.5 percent.” However the “Victoria Advocate” out of Texas recently ran a headline declaring the national furniture industry was stabilizing. The executive vice president of the National Home Furnishings Association attributes this stabilization to a basic need. After a while, furniture, particularly mattresses, beds and other daily staples, wear out and need to be replaced. He added, “Many companies have fared well, even during the downturn.”
One company that has seen sales improvement this year has been Home and Bedroom, an online retailer of quality discount furniture. Company spokesperson, Ben Weissman, said, “We’ve been very fortunate to have had a steady stream of business regardless of what the economy looked like. I believe our retail success hinges on a combination of two things: our ability to offer our customers reasonable prices without sacrificing the customer service they demand.”
The “Washington Post” recently reported the results of a ComScore survey that predicted Web sales would rise 11 percent in November and December versus “about 3 percent for sales in bricks-and-mortar stores.” Why? Because “online shoppers can view a large selection from home and get perks like free shipping,” both of which Home and Bedroom Furniture offer.
With headboards and daybeds with trundles by reputable names like Hillsdale Furniture, Fashion Bed Group, Simmons Beautyrest Mattresses and Pastel Furniture among Home and Bedroom’s inventory, Weissman may be on to something.
