IDC Urges Australia to Use Existing Alternatives to Detention
Australia (News4us.com) March 30, 2011
The International Detention Coalition (IDC) deeply regrets the death of a 20-year old Hazara young man on Monday night.
After a period of ten months in detention he allegedly committed suicide. The death in the Curtin Immigration Detention Centre is the sixth death in Australian detention centres in the last seven months. The IDC calls upon the Australian government to consider existing alternatives and to detain only as a last resort.
IDC Director, Grant Mitchell says, ‘We deeply regret this death and it sadly reminds us of the purpose of our international coalition.
This is a wakeup call to government to use alternatives before resorting to immigration detention’.
The IDC is a coalition of over 250 non-governmental groups and individuals working in more than 50 countries.
