Iran Hit with Even Tougher Sanctions for Non-Compliance

Iran has stood doggedly to its decision over nuclear enrichment, defying UN demands once again. The regime looks set to force the Security Council to vote on a fourth round of sanctions, ever tightening the financial controls on Iran and expanding a limited arms embargo even more.

The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has expressed her concerns, stating they were “the most significant sanctions that Iran has ever faced”. She was also very positive with the prospect of the new resolution, which has the support of all five of the UN’s veto-holding members.

Even though this round of sanctions was considered watered down by some members during long negotiations with Russia and China, the majority were pleased with the full support that sees existing restrictions tighten even more in areas like shipping and finance.

But Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad warned his country would not participate in any future nuclear talks if the sanctions were imposed. This latest stalemate in negotiations between the Security Council and the Iranian authorities is only the latest of many ongoing unstable communications.

What originally was a U.S. and Israeli concern that Tehran was secretly trying to build a nuclear bomb, has now spread and encompassed virtually the whole western world. Iran has always strenuously claimed that this nuclear programme is being created solely for peaceful energy use and much needed medical research.

In May a deal brokered by Turkey and Brazil for a nuclear fuel swap was considered more a ploy and thus dismissed by the Western Allies as basically too little too late. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has since stated that this nuclear fuel-swap deal on offer would not be repeated if it was not accepted unconditionally and further new sanctions imposed.

Mr Ahmadinejad has since warned Russia not to take the side of what he calls the enemies of the Iranian people. He also stated that if the US did not change its position “the first ones to lose would be President Obama and the people of the United States”
