Jute Theatre Company Celebrates 20th Milestone Season

As its 20th year anniversary fast approaches, JUTE Theatre Company is currently planning a series of milestone celebrations and events.

To get the ball rolling, this week the North Queensland’s leading professional theatre company launched its Audience Engagement and Artist Development programs for 2012, with a call out for the Far North region to get involved.

According to JUTE Theatre Company’s Artistic Director and CEO, Suellen Maunder, Audience Engagement and Artist Development are fundamental to the future  of contemporary theatre in north Queensland.

“As we get ready to celebrate 20 years, the value of development – in terms of both production and participation – has never been more important.

This is why JUTE actively implements a series of innovative programs that focus on doing just that,” she said.

This week JUTE launched, via its website, details of its Young Ambassadors (YAP) and Theatre Newbies (formerly Focus Forums) programs for 2012.

In so doing, it is now seeking applications from interested persons to participate in these free audience engagement activities in its milestone year.

Ms Maunder says “Young Ambassadors will have the opportunity to gain special insights into the workings of a professional theatre company and the creative process of a theatre production.

As representatives of JUTE, ambassadors will in turn, spread the word to family and friends.”

JUTE Young Ambassadors will receive many benefits including two skills workshops, vip double pass to all JUTE 2012 opening nights, unlimited access to JUTE 2012 shows, exclusive invitation to the season launch on 10 February, 2012, invitations to rehearsals, designer presentations, social events and media calls, opportunity for work experience and internships, an invitation to the 2012 JUTE National Regional Theatre Makers and Playwrights Conference and connections to other industry resources.

To be elegible for one of eight positions, applicants, from Cairns and surrounding region, must be aged between 17 – 30.   Applications can be made online by 6 January, 2012.  Visit

Formerly known as Focus Forums, JUTE’s ‘Theatre Newbies’ is designed to give those people who haven’t experienced a JUTE production for some time, or never, a hassle and cost free year of theatre with a chance to express their views.

“This program is not just about giving away free tickets, but rather, giving non-JUTE theatre-goers an insight into the art form and the opportunity to talk about the shows in a relaxed group discussion after each production – it’s like a live book club,” said Ms Maunder.

Caleb Wiles, a 2011‘Theatre Newbie’ participant said he recommends the experience to anyone considering applying for the program in 2012.

“It was a whole bunch of fun and it raised my awareness of the artistic offerings in Cairns, whilst the post production group discussions completed the theatre experience for me and gave the performances greater depth,” Mr Wiles said.

JUTE ‘Theatre Newbies’ receive an exclusive invitation to the season launch party on 10 February, 2012, free tickets to attend all of the forthcoming year’s productions, participation in facilitated discussions, introductions and insights into the world of theatre making.

Along with it’s Audience programs JUTE is also calling for budding playrights to particpate in the 2012 Enter Stage Write program, JUTE’s award winning script development program that has seen over 50 new plays being produced for the JUTE stage.

Enter Stage Write participant Brett Walsh said without the program he never would have matured as a writter “there is now a real opportunity for my work to produced on stage, which is a pretty amazing achievement espeically in a regional area,” Mr Walsh said.

Applications for all of JUTE’s Audience and Artistic Development programs are now being sought, with limited places available.  Interested persons can apply online.  Visit
