Karate Kid Chops A-Team Down in Box Office Takings

The new karate kid on the block Jaden Smith and his fighting mentor Jackie Chan have taken out the weekend box office takings by a long mile. The newly released film that includes Jadens parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett as producers has brought in $18.8 million so far this weekend, virtually doubling the A-teams $9.7 million.

After all the creative hype the newly re-made A-team film caused during pre-release, you could be forgiven for thinking it would have stormed to the top of the box office smash hits and stayed their for quite a while. Especially with its huge budget that is estimated to be $110 million. Ouch!

Sony’s more modest budget of $40 million could see it recoup its costs over the first weekend, with predictions of a $52 million weekend finish. No doubt this newly refreshed and successful franchise will create many more acting opportunities for Jaden Smith in the lead role.

As in the first karate kid, this film offers much in the way of mentor/student appeal with a very good pairing and chemistry shared between the teacher and his student. Once again East meets West in this clash of cultures that provide many avenues of light hearted moments that the whole family can enjoy.
