The Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Greg Combet has been asked to facilitate political discussions on climate change finance at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico.
Mr Combet will be working on these issues as a co-facilitator with Bangladesh.
The Mexican Foreign Secretary, Patricia Espinosa, made this request of the Australian and Bangladeshi Ministers to help resolve some of the key outstanding issues on climate change finance in the international negotiations.
“Finance is a critical part of obtaining a balanced package of decisions in Cancun. I look forward to working with my ministerial colleagues to seek practical solutions,” Mr Combet said.
One of the issues that will be discussed is the development of a global climate fund to help support developing countries adapt to the effects of climate change and reduce their own carbon pollution.
The development of a global climate fund was agreed to by parties under the Copenhagen Accord.
