Opera Australia together with Sydney Opera House will present “Opera for Flood Relief”, a special fund-raising concert on Sunday 6 February to aid those affected by the recent floods. The concert will be held in the Opera Theatre, Sydney Opera House with host Damien Beaumont and is supported by The Sydney Morning Herald.

The performance will include international guest artists currently in town for Opera Australia’s summer shows such as Rinat Shaham (Carmen) and Giorgio Caoduro (The Barber of Seville) and guest conductors. Major artists from Opera Australia will include Jacqueline Mabardi, and husband and wife singers Rosario La Spina and Milijana Nikolic, all of whom are from Queensland. Rising star Nicole Car, whose family is in Victoria, will also perform.

Joining them are many other Opera Australia principal singers, the Opera Australia Chorus and the AOBO – all of whom have volunteered their services to help support those in need. Sydney Opera House will also waive its costs as partner in this important fundraising initiative. As a national company, Opera Australia is keen to support national flood relief endeavours and will donate all proceeds to the Premier’s Fund in each state.

Adrian Collette, Chief Executive of Opera Australia says, “Over the past fortnight, many of our artists have raised this issue of how we can help those who are struggling with the natural disaster that has struck Queensland and Victoria. Very quickly the idea of a fund-raising concert has gained momentum and I’m very proud that every single person has offered their services to bring this to fruition. All proceeds raised will go to the Premier’s Funds in each state, and we hope to be
able to raise a sizeable contribution of around $100,000.”

Richard Evans, CEO of Sydney Opera House says, “We have all been dismayed and astonished at the forces of nature around our continent this summer, felt most acutely and so devastatingly in our neighbouring States of Queensland and Victoria. As we struggle to comprehend the impact of this disaster, Sydney Opera House audiences have already donated almost $60,000 over the last five days through collections following performances across all our venues. As the relief effort continues in at least two States, we are now proud to partner with Opera Australia to provide another point of
response in a tangible, financial way to our fellow Australians in need.”

Tickets are $75 for all seats and the program will include highlights of the current season and best-loved arias.

The concert will be broadcast live by ABC Classic FM.
