The Minister for Youth, Peter Garrett has congratulated Jessica Watson on being named the Young Australian of the Year for 2011.
At the age of 16 Jessica achieved her dream of sailing solo, unassisted, non-stop around the world. She overcame barriers including lack of funding and her own fears to circumnavigate the world.
“Jessica achieved an amazing goal of sailing solo, non-stop around the world, unassisted. It was a courageous dream she followed and she deserves this recognition,” Mr Garrett said.
“Jessica’s extraordinary efforts have encouraged others to turn their dreams and aspirations into reality – she is an inspiration to young Australians.”
Mr Garrett also congratulated all finalists in the Young Australian of the Year Award.
“The awards are a tremendous opportunity for all Australians to see the fantastic things that so many young people are doing and give us a way to recognise their achievements,” he said.
“Through our $64.9 billion investment in education we are providing all young Australians with the chance to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams, just as Jessica Watson has been able to.”
The Australian Youth Forum – the communication channel between Government, young Australians and the youth sector – play an important role as the official partner of the Young Australian of the Year Award.
