Printmaking Workshop with Artist in Residence Culminates in Creativity

A three day printmaking workshop with artist-in-residence, GW Bot has culminated in a collection of lithographic prints by local emerging and experienced artists.
GW Bot’s residency is the first of three planned in the lead up InkMasters Cairns inaugural event, InkFEST 2012 that will form part of this year’s Cairns Festival.
The second residency by Michael Kempton will take place from the 17 to 30 June, 2012.
Inkfest is an innovative addition to Cairns Festival showcasing the fascinating and diverse artform of printmaking.
The Inkfest program includes a number of inter-related printmaking activities, for indigenous and non-indigenous artists, emerging and experienced professional artists, and community engagement.
It includes two exhibitions, at the Tanks Arts Centre and Canopy Artspace, where some of the best local print media artists will be showing works alongside Australia’s most celebrated printmakers.
The three, 10 day residencies will be hosted at Editions Tremblay, Grafton Street, Cairns, with the first of these residencies commencing this week with G.W. Bot arriving on Sunday 15 April.
Each of the artists-in-residence will hold a three day workshop for local printmakers during their stay here to help raise the level of skills in their areas of specialization.
The three, Australian Artists-in-Residence are:
G.W. Bot 15-28 April Workshop dates 21, 22, 23 April
A full-time artist since 1985, GW Bot has held many solo exhibitions throughout Australia and world wide, and she is represented in major public collections.
She works across a range of mediums and disciplines and will work specifically in lithography for the InkFest workshop.
Michael Kempson 17 – 30 June Workshop dates 23, 24, 25 June

Etchings produced in Michael’s workshop will be turned into artists’ books – everyone who participates in the workshop gets to take home a unique collection of all the other participants’ prints.
Rew Hanks 24 June – 7 July Workshop dates 30 June, 1, 2 July
Coordinator Sydney Gallery School, Northern Sydney Institute. This workshop will be in reduction linocut, a technique that involves printing multiple colours from a single piece of linoleum.
Other Inkfest program highlights include the Inkmasters Print Exhibition from 27 Jul – 22 August, to be housed at the Tanks Art Centre.
Works by the artists in residence, workshop participants and invited printmakers from around Australia will be exhibited.
Selectors for the national exhibition will be Director Cairns Regional Gallery Andrea May Churcher, Director Kickarts/Djumbunji Press Ingrid Hoffmann and Artistic Director CIAF Avril Quail.
A concurrent exhibition at Canopy Artspace, Grafton Street, Cairns will showcase the works of indigenous artists who are participating in the Inkfest workshops.
Inkfest is organized by local printmaking group Inkmasters Cairns Inc. It is funded by Festivals Australia and Arts Queensland, and offered in collaboration with Cairns Festival.
