Response to Public Housing Protest Coinciding With Premier's Visit

The management of Bluewater residential community at Trinity Beach is this evening, responding to broadcast media reports today following a visit to Cairns by Premier, Anna Bligh.

The reports featured a lone protestor accusing Ms Bligh’s Government of corruption relating to the sale of land by another developer, not connected to the developer of the Bluewater master planned community, to the Queensland Government in December 2009.

The issue surrounds public housing apartments built on this land despite opposition from residents concerned that it would affect property prices and aesthetics.

The Bluewater Harbour development at Trinity Park incorporates the public housing apartments, and is in no way connected to the master planned Bluewater residential community at Trinity Beach.

Bluewater residential community’s national director, Phil Leahy said that despite the confusion with the similar name, Bluewater Harbour is an entirely different development.

Mr Leahy said that in line with Premier Bligh’s statement, he agrees that public tenants deserve decent public housing and considers that the high standard of accommodation that has been delivered at the adjacent Bluewater Harbour estate to be sympathetic to the surrounding architecture and environment.

“Today’s lone protest by an isolated resident is not indicative of Bluewater resident’s opinion or the community at large,” he said.
