Russian Government Delegation Given Insight into Australia’s World Renowned Expertise in Medivac Systems

Australia’s world-renowned expertise in medivac systems could lead to new trade ties with Russia, following a Russian government delegation to Sydney and Brisbane to learn more about our medivac model.

The delegates from the Ministries of Transport, Health, and Emergency Situations as well as Austrade’s Russia Post, last month met with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and Careflight, and relevant government organisations including Queensland Health, Ambulance NSW and Emergency NSW.

The group was given an in-depth briefing by RFDS about the national air medivac system including fixed-wing operations and insight to the variations in each state.  They were briefed on the medivac system in NSW including remote care, plane, helicopter and road transport, patient transfers between hospitals and emergency evacuations.

The delegates also met with private firms servicing the medical aviation sector for presentations about their specialised equipment and services for air and land patient transfer.

The group heard presentations on patient care in remote areas, specialist equipment for training of critical care doctors and medical support staff in the air medical environment and the Queensland funding model for the air medivac system.

Austrade’s Moscow-based Senior Trade Commissioner, Dan Tebbutt said, “The Australian medivac model is considered a world benchmark and the RFDS is well known globally in aviation and aero-medical sectors.

“This visit gave Russian officials an insight into Australia’s expertise and provided greater awareness of the structure and funding of the Australian medivac model.

“Australia is well placed to provide services and products for the planned Russian air medivac system and this visit could result in contracts for Australian companies once the Russian medivac system is up and running,” Mr Tebbutt said.

The Russian Ministries now plan to develop an air medivac strategy for presentation to their Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in 2011.
