Seafood Directions 2011 will kick off its three day conference with the presentation of Australia’s largest ever prawn cocktail.

In super-sizing the 70’s hors d’oeuvre into a massive 125 kilogram cocktail, the spectacle will take place at 6pm on Sunday 23 October at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

Spearheaded by the Australian Prawn Farmers Association (APFA), in conjunction with the wild caught prawn sector’s Australian Council of Prawn Fisheries (ACPF) and Queensland Seafood Marketers Association (QSMA) – this event will highlight the cocktail’s key ingredient of Australian prawns.

According to the event coordinator and executive officer of APFA, Helen Jenkins, the cocktail will comprise 60 kilograms of prawn tails derived from both wild catch and aquaculture sectors.

“In Australia, the prawn sector of our seafood industry currently produces on average 6500 tonnes from wild catch and 5100 tonnes from aquaculture.

“While this event will no doubt add a big dose of colour to our industry’s bi-annual conference, we also see it as a fun and feel-good way of drawing together wild caught and farmed sectors in promoting Australia’s seafood industry at large while highlighting the nutritional benefits of prawns’ high protein, low fat and rich source of omega-3’s.

“Not only will this be a feast of great Australian prawns, it is interesting to note that the other ingredients will amount to more than 120 iceberg lettuces, 60 litres of seafood cocktail sauce – and let’s not forget the garnish!” she said.

The Australian seafood industry’s bi-annual conference, Seafood Directions 2011 will take its cue from this year’s theme, “The Productivity Challenge”.

Hosted by the Queensland Seafood Marketers Association, Queensland Seafood Industry Association and the Australian Prawn Farmers Association, the three day program comprises an international line up of key note speakers, workshops, awards and social networking that will be held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre from Sunday 23 to Tuesday 25 October.
