Severely Affected Flood Areas in Queensland to be Given Commonwealth Government Financial Assistance
QLD, Australia (News4us.com) December 8, 2010
Attorney-General Robert McClelland today announced the Commonwealth Government will provide financial assistance to communities affected by severe weather and flooding in Queensland.
Commonwealth assistance will be provided through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) to eleven QLD Councils that have been declared natural disaster declared areas – the Banana, Barcaldine, Barcoo, Blackall-Tambo, Bundaberg, Central Highlands, Fraser Coast, Gladstone, Lockyer Valley, Longreach and Rockhampton councils.
Each of these Councils can now access assistance to cover the costs of the restoration of essential public assets and counter disaster operations.
“The Commonwealth will continue to monitor the flood situation in Queensland and stands ready to provide further support at the request of the Queensland Government,” Mr McClelland said.
Today’s announcement is in addition to the sixteen flood-affected communities in NSW receiving Commonwealth assistance after being declared natural disaster zones over the weekend and yesterday.
“Many communities across NSW and Queensland are doing it tough at the moment and the Commonwealth is working closely with Governments in both States to provide assistance,” McClelland said.
