Strategic Priority Package to Promote Strong Local Governance

The Regional Development Australia Far North Queensland and Torres Strait Inc (RDA FNQ&TS) committee will visit Mount Surprise this week to launch its Strong Local Governance Strategic Priority Package (SPP).

Details of the key strategies and initiatives of this package that focus on enhancing local government’s Roads Alliance model and expanding the model’s reach in other key asset areas while working towards a devolved government of the Torres Strait Islands will be unveiled at a dinner on Thursday 30 May that is attended by Mayors and community leaders of the surrounding region.

RDA FNQ&TS CEO, Sonja Johnson said the organisation’s Strong Local Governance package is one of 11 priority areas identified by the committee within its Regional Road Map.

The new three-year Regional Road Map will be released for community consultation next month.

The Regional Road Map is a critical document incorporating the aspirations, goals and strategies from community plans that is presented to both the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments to assist with their future planning and budget allocation.

This is the sixth SPP to be unveiled in the past 18 months following those focusing on the strategic areas of Climate Adaptation, Agricultural Futures, Business and Resource Sector Growth, Tourism and Aviation Futures and Regional Connectivity.

Ms Johnson said that the RDA FNQ&TS’s Strong Local Governance package is in short, a set of strategies and initiatives that recognizes the importance of Local government and its place at the heart of community planning and delivery across Far North Queensland and Torres Strait.

“Our region has made huge strides in voluntary regionalism through the FNQ Regional Organisation of Councils (FNQ ROC) and Regional Organisation of Councils of Cape York (ROCCY), thereby increasing the effectiveness of local government in many areas.  Combined with the expanded use of new infrastructure program models based on strategic asset management, major progress can be made in several areas,” she said.

The package has five key strategies and multiple initiatives.

As follows:

1)    Enable local governments to define and implement their communities’ strategic priorities identified within Strategic Plans requiring joint active implementation with Federal and State governments

2)    Regional Managers Coordination Network effectively resourced to coordinate and respond to regional issues

3)    Apply the Queensland Road Alliance Model across other asset classes (hard and natural)

4)    From the onset, engage resources and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait local governments to continue to improve governance and participate effectively in the projects that will have an impact on their communities

5)    Support and encourage further development of the FNQ ROC and ROCCY through funding investment
