Teen Sailor Abby Sunderland’s World Sailing Solo Ends Dramatically

Abby Sunderland Yacht Teen Sailor Abby Sunderland’s World Sailing Solo Ends DramaticallyAbby Sunderland the American teenager trying to sail solo around the world in her yacht “Wild Eyes” has been located quite weary, but safe and well. She was found around 2,000 nautical miles off the Coast of Western Australia battling some very big, rough seas and strong winds.

The Australian SES was the first on the scene with eleven observers aboard a Qantas Airbus searching for Abby and eventually spotting the Californian teen late yesterday. Her vessel has taken damage to the masthead and elsewhere, but is floating and stable in the treacherous seas.

First reports suggested that Abbey had set off two emergency beacons while fighting fierce weather conditions and mountainous seas which had damaged her vessel. The signals from the emergency beacons were picked up and triggered the frantic search and rescue by the Australian and French Authorities.

The French territory of La Reunion which is closer is sending a fishing boat to rescue Sunderland and should reach her at approximately 3pm (AWST) today.

Laurence Sunderland, Abbeys father stated yesterday that his daughter’s solo round-the-world quest was over and the family was just happy to have her back safe and well.

The Australian Authorities have stated they will not attempt to recover the costs of the search and rescue operation. Which is very gracious considering criticism is growing over just how prepared this young teen was to handle an around the world solo venture in the first place.

Questions have been raised about letting her sail in to the winter storm season and to recent repairs that had been carried out on her yacht within the last months. Yachting professionals are worried that more and more young people are being attracted to daring exploits such as this, with little or no experience to actually see it through in a safe manner.
