The Australian Communications and Media Authority Seeks Public Comment on the Proposal of New Radio Station Licences for NSW and QLD

The Australian Communications and Media Authority is seeking public comment on a proposal to make FM frequencies 103.1 MHz available at Wilcannia, NSW, 99.9 MHz available at Mossman, Qld, and 107.1 MHz available at Tiaro, Qld, for new long-term community radio broadcasting services.

‘The ACMA believes that the current temporary community broadcasting licensees in these areas have generated sufficient interest to consider providing long-term community radio broadcasting services,’ said ACMA Chairman Chris Chapman.

‘Before making a final decision, the ACMA is interested in receiving comments on the proposal from members of the Wilcannia, Mossman and Tiaro communities.’

The proposed changes are contained in the draft variations to the Bourke, Cairns and Maryborough radio licence area plans and accompanying explanatory paper.

Although temporary community broadcasting licences confer no right nor indicate any preference by the ACMA for a group to be granted a long-term community radio broadcasting licence, the ACMA is of the view that if new long-term community radio broadcasting licences were to be made available at Wilcannia, Mossman and Tiaro, it is likely that they would be taken up.

More information on the ACMA’s broadcast planning process and licence area plans can be found at the ACMA website or by calling 1300 850 115.

The closing date for comments on the proposals is 5:00 pm Friday 29 October 2010
