The Fifa World Cup of 2010 is finally under way! The 4 year wait and tumultuous build-up is finally over for many millions of fans all around the world. From the opening fanfare you could feel the vibrant electricity in the air throughout the stadium.
The World Cup Kick-Off Concert saw the Black Eyed Peas, Shakira and Alicia Keys bring the enormous crowd to their feet, dancing and singing along to the joyous music.
The first match in this super soccer tournament was between the home team South Africa vs. Mexico in the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. The thrilling match eventually ended in a draw 1-1 with the hungry fans voicing their unanimous approval at the skill level of all the players involved in the closely played game.
South Africa opened the scoring in the 55th minute with a goal by Tshabalala, sending the vuvuzelas (African horns) blasting to a screeching crescendo. Mexico the much favored team was not to be outdone with Marquez finally scoring on a cross in what was dubbed an undefended goal.
The vuvuzelas were momentarily stunned in to silence. But not for long as the huge crowd roared back to life once again, chanting and honouring their hometown heroes who played an exceptionally skilled game against what had been deemed some pretty tough odds.
Mexico goes on to face France, while South Africa takes on Uruguay in the next exciting round.
