The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has confirmed a 20-year-old Afghan man was found dead late today in his accommodation block at the Curtin Immigration Detention Centre near Derby.
“He was discovered in his accommodation at the centre at about 6.15pm AEDST,” a DIAC spokesman said.
“Detainees and detention health services provider staff worked to try and revive him, including administering CPR at the on-site medical centre.
“Paramedics have attended the scene and Western Australia Police will investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, which may become the subject of a report for the Coroner,” the spokesman added.
The deceased was an irregular maritime arrival.
Counsellors will be available to assist and support the centre’s detainees and staff.
Until the deceased’s next of kin have been informed, no further details of the man or the circumstances of his death will be released.
The department expresses its sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased man and will cooperate fully with the Coroner.
